Sleepover in the city: Market Street Hotel

We all know the worst part about holidaying abroad is the long journeys to and from your chosen destination. So why not cut out those boring airport queues and opt for a staycation on your doorstep.

There are so many reasons why staying closer to home is a no brainer. Not only are you doing your bit for the planet by cutting down on carbon emissions but you also get to start enjoying your holiday in half the time! Yes, we all love the warmer climates, and there will always be room for sandy beaches and sipping cocktails out of coconuts, but there is still something magical about walking around the city you live in and rediscovering the places you don’t normally have time to explore.

I was lucky enough to be invited to do just that and logging off at 5pm, headed straight to The Market Street Hotel in the centre of Edinburgh, just a short 10 minute walk from my front door. Located opposite Waverley Station, it’s in the perfect spot for those travelling up from other cities in Scotland or further south of the border.

As you make your way out the station, look out for the silver thistle sculpture ‘Blawn Wi the Wind’ by Artfe and you’ve arrived. Step through the elevator on the ground floor and straight up to the 7th floor to check in. The rooftop hosts Nor Loft, a Champagne lounge designed in a contemporary style and with stunning views across the city. Here you can enjoy all your drinks and meals during your stay, serving breakfast, afternoon tea, small plates into the evening and even Oyster happy Hour every Thursday from 4-6pm – currently clearing my diary every Thursday afternoon for the foreseeable.

We picked up our keys and headed to our bright, spacious Vista room, again with the most amazing views from the bedroom window. The bathroom was kitted out with lush (full size) Votary products, none of those tiny bottles that leave you fighting over who gets to wash their hair as there is never enough to go around.

The attention to detail was excellent with a lovely gesture from the Market Street Hotel team to enjoy a glass of fizz on the rooftop. We banked these for after our dinner at Nok’s Kitchen by the castle – which was the best Thai I’ve had in a very long time! They made the most incredible cocktails and dumplings shaped like birds (yes you did read that right) – I could go on and on but will save that for another day. If you ever find yourself in the city centre or down in Stockbridge looking for a place to eat, Nok’s Kitchen is a must!

After dinner we headed back to the hotel to end the evening with a glass of Champagne at Nor Loft. If fizz ain’t your thing don’t worry, they also have some very tasty cocktails & mocktails – I can highly recommend the sweet and refreshing ‘Sir Walter’ cocktail with Johnnie Walker whisky, lemon juice, raspberry and honey. Sit inside in the cosy lounge or outside on the balcony overlooking the city lit up in the darkness, the perfect spot to end your night.

Wind down in the room with a wide selection of movies or curl up with a good book and peppermint tea before heading to bed, the most heavenly bed with plump pillows and a divine duvet, sleep comes quickly.

The next morning, we were up bright and early and back to Nor Loft for breakfast. A gorgeous buffet awaits with a great selection of fresh fruits, cereals, pastries and more. They also had a fridge full of berry smoothies which were deelish! We opted for the eggs benedict and avocado on toast from the a la carte menu, with a side of Champagne of course. I’ll definitely be heading back for the pancake stack!

It was finally time to reluctantly check out and say our goodbyes to a brilliant midweek break in the city. It was a short stay for us, but not the last – I’ll definitely be making use of the Egg card holder discount for a return visit or two.

Thank you to everyone at the market Street Hotel for hosting us and for such a warm welcome, see ya’ll soon!
