EGG Recommends – Essential Skincare!

Hands up whose skin is suffering during isolation? I know mine is looking less than Zoom call friendly right now and I’m pretty sure I’m not alone. The combination of unforgiving weather conditions coupled with being cooped up indoors (who doesn’t have the thermostat cranked up) quickly wreaks havoc on our skin.

However, there is a quick fix with long lasting benefits: serums and oils. Intensely hydrating, nourishing, radiance boosting, corrective and anti-ageing, facial oils and serums are the best investment for anyone looking to transform dry, winter skin. That, and a good dose of H20, of course.

Serums and Oils

“Facial serums and oils contain a high proportional concentration of active ingredients, making them ideal for targeting specific concerns such as wrinkles, radiance, acne, hydration or pigmentation,” explains EGG Fiona Fowley, who owns the multi-award winning Zen Lifestyle. “Unlike a moisturiser, serums have lipid-soluble bases which allow these potent ingredients to penetrate into the epidermis as opposed to lying on the surface.”

Fellow EGG and Edinburgh skincare expert Justine Mitchell of Chamomile Sanctuary agrees and is a firm fan of serums and oils at this time of year.

She says: “Long winter months can be challenging for our skin. This is the time of the year when our skin needs additional products to help maintain a healthy appearance. Facial serums and oils give an additional booster to daily skin routine and help to protect skin.”

Layering for impact

According to Justine, we should be using both a serum and oil for maximum benefit and protection, layering an oil over a serum before finishing with a moisturiser.

Serums are highly concentrated products that are absorbed by skin instantly, working on deeper levels of the skin”, she explains. “Oils are thicker, therefore are absorbed more slowly giving long lasting protection. They work as a barrier and provide much needed nourishment.

“Facial oils are also great anti-ageing products. They are rich in antioxidants and slow down the ageing process helping to repair some existing damage to the skin. Oils also make the skin smooth and soft creating a beautiful glow. Many also contain essential oils or botanical extracts helpful in targeting skin problems.”

What Works

Potent, high-quality serums have now become a prerequisite for most brands today. Advanced and multi-tasking ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, ceramides and peptides all work to boost skin quality fast. And, it seems, you get what you pay for.

Zen Lifestyle’s Fiona agrees. She explains: “Given the highly-concentrated active ingredients in many of today’s high tech breed of advanced and specialised serums and oils, it’s little surprise they come with a hefty price tag. However, a little of the product goes a long way and can have a transformational effect on the skin. My advice is to spend as much as you can afford on a potent serum to correct skincare concerns as there’s a fantastic array of affordable facial oils out there, to suit all budgets.”

Selecting the right serum and oil is really down to the skin itself – its current needs and age.

“Personal skin concerns are the priority when selecting facial products,” explains Justine. “Does your skin feel tight, look dull or maybe out of balance, for example. Or, have you noticed more spots/blemishes? There is a huge variety of products to choose from therefore it is a good idea to speak with your facial therapist who can help you to choose the appropriate product.”

Thankfully, some Edinburgh salons – including Zen Lifestyle and Chamomile Sanctuary – are offering telephone and virtual skincare consultations to help their clients through lockdown. So, call the salon for advice or product recommendations and support local!

There’s a myriad of great oils and serums out there but we’ve pulled together our current winter favourites. And the best bit is, you can buy them all locally. Happy Shopping!
