A Night at the Waldorf Astoria
We all need to escape sometimes. To be able to press pause on everyday life, to recharge those
batteries and have some unadulterated precious ‘we-time.’ As the mother of all years comes to a
close, the allure of an indulgent staycation has never been stronger.
As Vogue magazine aptly put it, ‘a staycation is the new vacation’ and there’s a wealth of
destinations on our doorstep – and, importantly in our own Tier – to make for great short break that supports the local tourism sector. Arguably one of the best out there is the iconic five star Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh – The Caledonian. So when the luxury hotel created a seriously indulgent and exclusive overnight break package just for EGG, I couldn’t resist trying it out first.
On a miserable and rainy day, the Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh – The Caledonian couldn’t have felt
more welcoming. First impressions count and the festive decorations were beautiful – a winter
wonderland inside and out. It’s worth noting that you can get a complimentary private transfer*
with the EGG offer but we opted to drive and make use of their car park – also free for EGGs.
After an early check-in (included within the offer), we headed straight to check out the
All EGG card holder will receive a free upgrade to a Premier Castle Facing Room as part of
the package, and you can pay extra for a suite – but whatever you choose, wow, those perfectly
framed Edinburgh castle views are something else. If you can lure yourself away from the window,
the spacious rooms are beautifully furnished, combining modern luxury and Victorian style. Spa-like bathrooms feature bathrobes, slippers and exclusive Salvatore Ferragamo bath products.
There’s complimentary access to the multi-award winning and UK’s only Guerlain Spa which comes with indoor swimming pool (and views of the castle again), whirlpool and gym. My other half opted for a swim and gym session, whilst I treated myself to a Caledonian Chic full body massage. This powerfully relaxing massage was one of the best massages I’ve had a in a long time; aches and pains were expertly massaged away using adapted techniques inspired by the local history of Scotland.
And those Guerlain massage oils…sublime.
Sadly, Grazing by Mark Greenaway was temporarily closed during our stay, as was the famed Caley
Bar as Edinburgh was in Tier 3, but the acclaimed Grazing restaurant plans on re-opening this week, from Friday to Sunday, throughout the festive period. The a la carte menu will be a 2 courses for £30, 3 course for £40 or a 6-course tasting menu for £60. And the popular Sunday Roast returns at £30pp for two course.
We were happy in the supremely stylish Peacock Alley where breakfast and dinner is served, along
with their stunning festive afternoon tea experiences. During our stay there was also no alcohol
permitted but there’s a specially curated mocktail menu…or you can have a full bar service in the
The EGG package includes an in-room cocktail experience – Gin & Tonic flight, Whisky Flight or Make Your Own Martini Kit – and we opted for a taste of the Scottish gins as a pre-dinner drinks. Oh and did I mention that champagne is included in the offer too? A whole bottle of champagne delivered to your room. Yum.
We enjoyed dinner in Peacock Alley where an edited menu of classic dishes awaits, before returning to our room to finish the champagne. There’s an array of Family Fun & Relaxing Room Amenities available, you can add on to your experience. Prices start at £25 with highlights including theMonopoly Night (your very own Edinburgh Edition Monopoly Board, snacks and soft drinks) and the Romantic Bath Kit which includes a bottle of Champagne, a bouquet of fresh roses and a jar of rose petals and bubble bath to set the mood for a relaxing night in.
After a restful night’s sleep in our super comfy outsized bed, we opted to have breakfast in our
room. Again, the menu was limited but perfectly curated to offer the very best luxury breakfast
experience you’d expect from a five star hotel. And it was freshly cooked to order, arrived hot on a
white linen-covered trolley and utterly delicious too.
With a late check-out available, we played tourists for the day and took a stroll up to the
castle before exploring the old town. After a festive hot chocolate back at the hotel, we did some
shopping along George Street before sadly heading home back to reality. It was the ultimate
staycation and we’re already planning our return.
