Womensday 2020 with Lesley Gracie
My name is Lesley Gracie and I’m a Staff Nurse in General Intensive Care at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. I live with my fiancee Kirsty and our crazy rag-doll kitten ‘Ziggy’.
Lockdown isn’t affecting me as badly as others as I’m still able to go out to work each week, which weirdly is keeping me sane. The days I’m at home are a welcomed rest as shifts are mentally and physically exhausting at the moment.
As well as affecting my ability to see my family and friends, the biggest impact that the COVID-19 pandemic is having on me is at work. In all my twenty-one years working in Intensive Care, I’ve never dealt with anything like this and hope to never again. Busy doesn’t come close.
What scares me most is the thought of people breaching lockdown out of frustration and this going on for a much longer time. I’m feeling anxious, but also determined and hopeful.
My community right now is my partner and my work family, I’ve never been prouder to work for the NHS. Shifts are unbelievably stressful and hard but we are pulling together and getting each other through this. I love them dearly for it.
I’d hope that in 6 months time we have returned to a more normal way of life, one where we continue to be more mindful and kinder to others and where we’ve reconnected to what’s truly important.
Huge thanks to Leslie and to all our frontline workers, we will never forget this x
