Making social media the perfect business platform
Memes, hashtags, facebook pokes (whatever happened to those!), snaps and instastories – navigating the world of social media can be tricky, and that’s just on a personal level. What about when it comes to using it to support and grow your business? And what do you do when the work force behind that business is just you?
Given the birthplace of EGG, I know most of you reading will be facebook savvy, and I imagine a large majority of you are guilty of falling down an Instagram hole or two, scrolling into the wee hours and making impromptu purchases led by social media advertising. The options of where and how you can use social media for your business are endless, and it can seem a little daunting with all the other million things you need to do on a day to day basis. Here are a few tips to get you started – if you like what you read, sign up for one of my Social Savvy workshops.
Choose your platform wisely
A bit like life, there is no point in trying to be all things to all people. Think about who your target audience is, and do a little research into where those users are most engaged on social media. Don’t be fooled into thinking facebook is just for the teens. Most new facebook accounts are activated by the ‘silver surfer’ generation, whereas snapchat is incredibly influential in reaching a younger demographic of customer. Instagram advertising is now controlled by facebook, so the latter is a great place to start, and you can always tag on some Instagram advertising further down the line.
Be clear about what you want from your social media activity. This is usually a mix of growing brand awareness and driving traffic to a website. Make sure your posts reflect that. If you’re looking for engagement, ask a question – encourage your audience to respond. If you want them to click through to your website, give them a good enough reason – our social media pages are filled with noise, so you need to be creative, honest and engaging.
Create awesome content
Your content also needs to give the audience something they want. That could be facts, exclusive prices, stories that people can connect to, the list goes on. Video content will always perform better and reach more people. You don’t need a fancy agency to create Hollywood-worthy mini-films either. There are many, free platforms online with ready-made templates to create engaging video content for social media. And make sure your content is channel specific, make use of hashtags on Instagram to grow your audience, and tag in any third-party partners properly.
Engage with your audience
It’s not just a numbers game – it’s all about engagement. 100 relevant followers on social media who love your brand and engage with your posts are much more valuable than 10,000 followers who don’t care about what you have to say. For the customer, much of the joy of social media is interacting with brands they love, so if your followers are commenting, respond! Don’t be afraid to share your customers’ content either. We all love a brag, humble or otherwise, and for this reason we’re constantly sharing images of our recent experience and purchases. The world of online influencers can, when navigated correctly, become incredibly valuable to smaller brands. But that’s a whole other post.
